U.S. B-2 Visitor Visa Photo Requirements: DS-160 Size, Upload, and Common Mistakes (2026)

Prepare a B-2 visa photo for DS-160 with the official digital-image specifications, upload guidance, and a practical error checklist.

B-2 photos use the standard DS-160 visa-photo rules

The B-2 visitor visa is a nonimmigrant visa category, but its digital-photo requirement follows the Department of State’s general DS-160 rules. Start with the official digital-image requirements, not a retailer’s generic passport-photo preset.

Digital specifications to check

For the cited U.S. visa digital-image route, the photo must be a JPEG in sRGB color space, square, and 600 × 600 to 1200 × 1200 pixels. The file must be no larger than 240 KB. The image must be recent and show you against a plain white or off-white background. Your face should be clearly visible, centered, and not digitally altered to change your appearance. Eyeglasses are generally not allowed except for rare, documented medical circumstances.

These are digital-upload rules. A printed photo requested by a consulate follows a separate physical format, generally 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm). Always follow the appointment or consulate instruction if it differs.

Uploading the photo in DS-160

The DS-160 form instructs nonimmigrant-visa applicants to upload a digital image. If the confirmation page displays your photo, the upload function succeeded. If it displays an “X,” the Department of State says the photo upload failed; bring a compliant printed photo with the confirmation page and follow the instructions of the embassy or consulate where you apply. See the official DS-160 FAQ.

Do not describe a successful upload as a visa approval or a guarantee that no further photo issue will arise. The embassy or consulate makes the final decision.

Common avoidable problems

  • Reusing an old photo that no longer reflects your current appearance.
  • Uploading a non-square image, the wrong file format, or a file over the limit.
  • Using a background with shadows, texture, or objects instead of a plain white or off-white background.
  • Heavy compression that makes the image soft or pixelated.
  • Filters, beauty edits, face reshaping, or other digital changes to your appearance.

A safe preparation workflow

Take a new, clear original image in even light. Leave room around your head so that it can be framed without cutting too tightly. Check the file format, square dimensions, and file size; if the original has a quality or background problem, retake it instead of trying to edit it away. A document-photo service may help identify common formatting issues, but it cannot promise visa approval or replace the official review.

Bottom line

For a B-2 application, use the current DS-160 digital-image rules, confirm the upload result on the confirmation page, and keep an eye on the specific consulate’s instructions. The photo is only one part of a visa application.
