OCI Signature Requirements: Size, Format and How to Upload (2026 Guide)

Prepare your OCI signature JPEG with the right ratio, pixels and file size. Includes upload steps, fixes, minor-applicant guidance and official sources.

Quick answer: Prepare a genuine JPEG of the applicant’s handwritten signature, on white paper, in a wide rectangle with a 3:1 width-to-height ratio. The Embassy of India in Santiago’s checklist lists 200 × 67 to 1500 × 500 pixels, up to 500 KB. Check your own upload screen and mission checklist before exporting. A 600 × 200 pixel JPEG below 200 KB is a useful starting point when those limits apply; it is not a guarantee for every application route.

The signature and photograph are separate files. A technically successful upload also does not mean the application has been approved. This guide explains the dimensions, how to prepare the image, and how to diagnose errors without repeatedly changing the wrong setting.

OCI signature requirements at a glance

All pixel dimensions below are written as width × height.

ItemWhat to prepare
FormatJPEG/JPG; changing a filename extension does not convert the image
ShapeWidth approximately three times the height: 3:1 width-to-height, or 1:3 height-to-width
Published size range200 × 67 to 1500 × 500 pixels in the Santiago checklist
Published file limitUp to 500 KB in that checklist; confirm your upload field’s limit
Practical example600 × 200 pixels, below 200 KB, if accepted by your application screen
AppearanceComplete, readable handwritten signature on white paper; no clipped or stretched strokes
Young applicantsThe child’s signature, handwritten name or thumb impression as required by the applicable checklist

The VFS USA fresh-OCI upload guide also gives a 500 KB JPEG/JPG limit and the wide signature dimensions. Its extracted text interleaves photo and signature specifications, so read the relevant section carefully rather than copying a square photo size into the signature field.

Why do websites give different OCI signature file sizes?

You may see 200 KB or 500 KB limits, different maximum dimensions, or much smaller figures in older instructions. Do not assume those numbers all describe the same upload field, application type or portal version. A supporting-document PDF limit is not a signature-image limit.

Before making your file, check three things together: the permitted format, the pixel range and the maximum file size shown for Applicant Signature. Compare them with your mission or application centre’s checklist. If those instructions conflict, seek clarification from that channel before submitting.

A 600 × 200 image below 200 KB falls within the published range above. It will still be too large if your particular field requires, for example, less than 40 KB. Compress to the actual limit while keeping every stroke legible; avoid making a second application simply to troubleshoot an upload.

The 1:3 ratio explained

A signature image is a landscape rectangle. Width ÷ height = 3: 600 ÷ 200 = 3. A square crop or a tall 200 × 600 image has the wrong shape.

The published minimum of 200 × 67 pixels is a rounded example. Using 600 × 200 gives an exact 3:1 ratio without working at the smallest permitted size. First crop the paper to the right shape, then resize proportionally. Do not force an uncropped phone photograph into those dimensions, which can distort the handwriting.

How to create and upload your OCI signature image

1. Sign on clean white paper

Use dark blue or black ink and leave space around the signature. Use your normal signature rather than inventing a new style for the application. VFS UK specifically asks for consistency with the application form and passport copy where applicable; consult your own checklist for the corresponding instruction.

2. Scan or photograph the signature

Capture the page in even light, with the camera parallel to the paper. Avoid glare, shadows and folds. Use a clear original rather than a screenshot of a small signature embedded in another document.

3. Crop to a wide rectangle

Leave a modest white margin around all strokes. Keep dots, loops and the end of the signature inside the crop. Crop to 3:1 width-to-height; do not stretch the handwriting to fill the canvas. For phone editing steps, see how to resize an image on iPhone.

4. Resize to the permitted pixel dimensions

Use 600 × 200 pixels as an example if your screen allows it. Check the exported file’s dimensions rather than relying on the size of its preview. A larger image cannot restore detail that was missing from a blurry original.

5. Export as a real JPEG within the size limit

Export as JPG/JPEG. Renaming signature.png to signature.jpg leaves the underlying PNG unchanged. Our JPG conversion guide explains the distinction.

Check the final file’s size. If necessary, lower JPEG quality gradually while checking the thin strokes at full size. Our image compression guide explains file-size reduction. Keep the original so you can export again without repeatedly compressing an already degraded copy.

6. Use a simple filename

Use a name such as signature.jpg, with one extension. Check that the actual filename is not signature.jpg.png or signature.jpg.jpg; some file managers hide extensions. A simple name reduces avoidable filename issues, but it does not fix an invalid image format.

7. Upload and inspect the saved preview

Open the official OCI portal, select the correct application service and jurisdiction, and retain your application reference. In the applicant photo/signature section, choose each file in its own field and complete the upload confirmation.

Inspect the resulting preview for cropping, orientation and clarity. Save or continue as instructed, then check that the image remains attached to the application. Supporting documents have their own upload stage. Follow any local requirements for printed forms, physical documents, appointments or biometrics; an online image upload does not waive them.

Common OCI signature upload errors and fixes

ProblemWhat to checkPractical action
“Only jpeg/jpg” or unsupported formatActual image encoding, not just the extensionExport a fresh JPEG from the original
“More than one extension”Double extensions or complicated filenameUse signature.jpg, then retry the genuine JPEG
File too largeSize of the exported file and the limit for this fieldCompress below that specific limit
Wrong dimensions or ratioWidth and height may be reversedCrop to 3:1, then resize within the displayed range
Accepted but unclearFaint strokes, shadows, clipping or distortionRetake or rescan; preserve the complete signature
Correct file still failsExact error, saved application state and sessionSave the reference, reopen the existing application and retry; contact portal support if it persists

A different browser or a fresh session may help with a session problem, but it cannot repair the wrong format or dimensions. Record the exact error before troubleshooting. Share the error and technical file properties with support rather than posting your signature or identity documents publicly.

OCI signature rules for children and minors

Do not treat every child’s application as an adult-signature upload. VFS UK’s instructions specify a thumb impression below age five, and a signature or handwritten name from age five to under eighteen. The applicant’s box should contain the child’s required mark; parents sign separately where requested.

Other missions may describe the rule by whether the minor can sign. For example, the Consulate General of India in Auckland instructs minors unable to sign to use a left thumb impression. Check the checklist for your country, application category and child’s age, including which thumb and ink to use.

Capture the required mark clearly on white paper and follow the upload field’s image specifications. Preserve the shape of a thumb impression inside the required image canvas; never stretch the fingerprint itself into a wide rectangle. Do not substitute a parent’s signature or a typed name for the applicant’s mark unless that channel explicitly directs you to do so.

What changed with e-OCI in 2026?

The Embassy of India in Bogota’s e-OCI announcement identifies 30 June 2026 as the launch date. It should not be described as a universal switch to electronic cards on 1 May.

An electronic OCI card and the evidence required during an application are separate matters. The announcement alone does not establish a new signature-image size or remove mission-specific verification steps. Use the current portal specifications and local checklist when you apply.

Your OCI photo is a separate upload

The signature’s wide crop must not be used for the photograph. Prepare the photo according to its own square dimensions, composition, background and file-size instructions. See our OCI photo requirements guide and online OCI photo preparation guide.

You can use PhotoOmni to prepare a document photo, then compare the downloaded file with your application’s requirements. Do not use generated handwriting or redraw a signature. Final acceptance of all submitted material rests with the receiving authority.

Frequently asked questions

What is the OCI signature size in pixels?

The official checklist cited above lists 200 × 67 to 1500 × 500 pixels. A 600 × 200 image is a practical example within that range. Confirm the dimensions for your particular upload field.

Is the OCI signature limit 200 KB or 500 KB?

The cited Santiago and VFS USA guides list 500 KB. Other instructions may differ. Follow the limit shown for your signature upload, rather than a PDF or photograph limit.

Can I use a PNG, PDF or typed signature?

For a field requiring JPEG/JPG, export a genuine JPEG of the required handwritten signature or child’s mark. A PDF, PNG or typed replacement does not satisfy that requirement merely because its extension is changed.

Does my signature need to match my passport?

Use your normal signature consistently. VFS UK expressly refers to matching the application form and passport copy where applicable. Follow the corresponding instruction for your own mission.

How do I upload an OCI signature for a baby?

Check the minor-applicant checklist for your jurisdiction. Where a thumb impression is required, upload a clear image of the specified thumb impression in the applicant’s field, and complete the parents’ separate declarations as instructed.

Does a successful upload mean my signature is approved?

No. The portal can accept the file technically while the application still awaits document review. Check the preview, complete the remaining steps and monitor the official application status.
