  • Use a new, clear colour photo taken within the last month. For online applications, use an unaltered digital image at least 600 × 750 px and 50 KB–10 MB.
  • The baby or child must be the only person in the photo. Toys, dummies, bottles, hands, and visible supports must not appear.
  • Children under 6 do not have to look directly at the camera or keep a plain expression. Babies under 1 do not have to keep their eyes open.
  • For a baby under 1, lay the child on a plain light-coloured sheet and take the photo from above. You may support the head, but your hand must not be visible.
  • For a paper application, provide 2 separate, identical professional-standard photos measuring 35 × 45 mm; the crown-to-chin image must be 29–34 mm high.

Yes. A child under 16 needs a child passport and a new photo, even if the child is a newborn. A UK child passport is normally valid for 5 years.
Can a UK baby have their eyes closed in a passport photo?
Yes, if the baby is under 1. GOV.UK says babies under one do not have to have their eyes open. Older children should have their eyes open and visible where possible.
